The emotion of feeling overwhelmed arises when an individual perceives that the demands placed upon them exceed their capacity to cope, manage, or respond effectively. Overwhelm can stem from various sources such as excessive responsibilities, emotional burdens, or rapid changes that outpace one’s ability to adapt. In this state, people may struggle to think clearly, prioritize tasks, or make decisions, often resulting in procrastination, withdrawal, or emotional outbursts. Though overwhelming experiences can feel paralyzing, they also signal the need for boundaries, support, and self-care, offering an opportunity to reassess one’s limits and restore balance.
